Shades of Selfishness
Chew on these words.
Being good to people because you don't know tomorrow is selfish. If you peeked into tomorrow and don't find them being useful to you, what happens? You withdraw?
Be good to people because it is what nature has called us to be; "good". To put up with everyone and their faults. In other words, people are our occupation.
•
Being grateful to the gods or to a fellow man because when praises go out blessings come forth is selfish.
Be grateful because gratitude is a virtue and is courteous.
•
Showing respect because it is reciprocal is selfish. For, what is the difference between you and the man who eats his cake and wants to have it back?
Give respect to all men because it is rational and civil - character of one who possesses the logos, except you don't.
•
Loving your enemy because you want to heap coals of fire on his head is yet selfish. Who then is a hypocrite?
Forgive because even you are an enemy to virtue and in spite, the gods still take interest in your matter, for in forgiveness the soul finds redemption.
